Definitions
- Acculturation: absorbing musical sounds with growing comprehension over the semester
- Audiation: (is to music, what thought is to language) Music is a result of the need to communicate. Performance is the way the communication takes place. Audiation is what is being communicated. It basically means that you are understanding what you are communicating musically.
- Aptitude: one's potential to achieve musically; based in audiation. Developmental until around age 9. Multidimensional: tonal, rhythmic. Both formal instruction and informal guidance.
- Melody: the arrangements of pitches (and rhythms) into a single perceived unit; a tune (horizontal)
- up/down/same
- steps/skips
- tonalities: major/minor/others
- Harmony: pitches that sound together in a pleasing way; at least 2 voices singing different parts at the same time (vertical)
- Rhythm: rhythm, beat, meter
- beat: steady pulse; can change tempo, felt internally, layers of beat: macro beat, micro beat
- meter: groupings of the beat; duple (groups of 2), triple (groups of 3), unusual (groups of 2 and 3 together); 90% of our music is duple or triple
Expressive Qualities:
- Tempo: fast/slow (speed of the beat
- one hears extremes alone before together or changes
- slower tempos are harder to audiate
- Dynamics: loud/soft
- one hears extremes before combined or changes
- don't confuse with tempo!
- Timbre: unique sound color, quality
- you can adjust your voice
Movement Elements:
- Flow: the two extremes are free (continuous) flow and bound flow
- bound flow: strength, force, stiffness
- both: alternate between (not a gradual change, because it's then difficult to distinguish)
- Weight: heavy/light or strong/gentle
- light: floating feeling, different from flow (floor is covered with eggshells; walk without breaking any)
- both: eggshells; don't crack, then crack
- Space: self-space/group-space or stationary/loco-motor
- group space: shared together
- stationary: in one place
- loco-motor: moving through space
- Time:slow/quick
- fast: popcorn
- both: statues
